Why, hello there. I'm Gemma, and I'm so excited to have you here in my litter corner of the universe. This blog is a place where I share my journey as a mother, a wife, a writer, a young woman and more. I love having the opportunity to share my story with others, and finding community and support in this vast realm we call the internet. Here's a little bit about what I do with my life at the moment:
I am a writer, and I always have been. I write in secret journals. I write for other blogs. I write for my own blog. I write soul-baring, laugh-in-my-own-face personal essays. I write shorts stories and novels.
My most current projects include a collection of intertwined short stories that take place in the small desert township where I met my high school sweetheart turned husband, and the rewriting of a young adult Taekwondo romance/tragedy which I wrote after a particularly harrowing break-up at the age of fifteen.
Right now I'm mother to a kindergartner boy, a preschooler daughter and a baby boy on the verge of his first birthday. Motherhood is one of those things that somehow becomes the crux of your being without your consent. Like a drug addiction of a life-altering tragedy - far more lovely, of course, but every bit as life-consuming. Which is to say, it is the part of me around which all other parts are built, from now until eternity.
I write a lot about motherhood because it's beautiful and brutal and everything in between. Because it defines me in the best and worst ways I can imagine. And because regardless of the good, the bad, and the ugly that comes with it, I am forever grateful that I took the ill-advised plunge into young and reckless motherhood.
I have always loved to cook and share food with others. It's one of the ways I show love. It's occasionally one of the ways i earn money, baking wedding cakes and such. Sometimes I'll share a sweet tidbit with you, and I hope you'll enjoy it.
I named this blog Journey of Love a long time ago, when I didn't really know what I was doing (oh, how little has changed). I thought, "yeah, this sounds good and bloggy and somewhat profound," and I rolled with it. It's total coincidence that it has become a sort of mantra for my life, a phrase that constantly reminds me of where I have been and where I am going.
I love many things and many people. The list of love is far too lengthy and unfinished to publish here. But it is important to note that I love, because love is what guides me nowadays, in every which wonderful direction.
That's the long and short of it.
I also like to talk to people, to hear your stories and to be given space in your world. You can comment here, catch up with me on Facebook or Twitter, or you can send me an email at gemmalouisehartley @ gmail dot com.
